How To Choose the Right Eventing Coach for You

Mar 27
Eventing is often described as the ultimate equestrian challenge – three disciplines, one horse, one rider, and countless variables to manage. For the majority of riders competing at BE80, BE90 and BE100, the focus is simple: enjoy your horse, improve your riding and build confidence in a safe, supportive environment.

Whether you’re thinking of eventing for the first time, stepping up a level or returning to competition after time away, having the right coach alongside you can make all the difference.
But how do you choose the right eventing coach for you?

Start with Your Goals

At grassroots level, clear and realistic goals are key.

Are you:
  • Looking to complete your first BE80 or BE90 with confidence?
  • Aiming to step up to BE100 or Novice?
  • Producing a young horse and building its education slowly and correctly?
  • Wanting to feel more secure across country?
  • On a mission to qualify for a championship?
Being honest about where you are – and where you want to get to – will help you find a coach who can support your journey, not rush it.

Why Choose a British Eventing Accredited Coach?

Working with a British Eventing Accredited Coach gives you reassurance, structure and sport-specific expertise.

British Eventing recognises that riders at different stages require different coaching experience, which is why each Accredited Coach is placed into one of two categories based on qualifications and background. Importantly, all British Eventing Accredited Coaches are required to hold:
  • Public liability insurance
  • A current first aid certificate
  • A safeguarding children workshop certificate
  • A valid DBS check
This means you can train knowing your coach meets essential professional, safety and welfare standards.

Crucially for grassroots riders, Accredited Coaches understand the pathway of the sport. They know the rules, the qualification systems and the skills needed at each level. They can help you:
  • Break down cross-country questions in a progressive way
  • Improve your show jumping consistency
  • Develop correct flatwork foundations
  • Plan a realistic and enjoyable season

Understanding the Coaching Levels

BE Level 2 Coach
A BE Level 2 Coach has shown strong technical knowledge and coaching skills up to and including Novice level.

They will hold one or more recognised qualificaions, such as:

  • BECC Level 2
  • BHS Stage 4 Senior Coach (pre-1 January 2021)
  • BDCC Level 2 plus British Eventing Show Jumping & Cross Country assessment
  • BSCC Level 2 plus British Eventing Dressage & Cross Country assessment

For many grassroots riders, a BE Level 2 Coach is the perfect fit – experienced, knowledgeable and skilled at helping combinations build confidence and consistency.

BE Level 3 Coach

A BE Level 3 Coach has proven their technical knowledge and coaching skills at 2* level and above.

They will hold one or more of the following qualifications:

  • BECC Level 3
  • FBHS
  • BE endorsed UKCC Level 4
  • BHS Stage 5 Performance Coach (pre-1 January 2021)
  • BHS Stage 5 Performance Coach Eventing
  • BDCC Level 3 plus British Eventing Show Jumping & Cross Country assessment
  • BSCC Level 3 plus British Eventing Dressage & Cross Country assessment

If you are progressing up the levels or want access to high-performance insight while still competing at grassroots, a Level 3 Coach can provide that additional depth of experience.

Consider Group Training Opportunities

BE Accredited coaches can all be contacted directly to arrange one-to-one coaching but British Eventing also runs group training sessions and camps throughout the country, suitable for all ages and levels. These sessions are delivered by our British Eventing Accredited Coaches and are designed to provide high-quality, accessible training in a welcoming environment.

Group training is a cost-effective way to:

  • Train with top coaches
  • Build confidence in a supportive setting
  • Practise competition-style exercises
  • Meet other like-minded riders in your area

Plus British Eventing members receive 20% off these sessions, making it an excellent-value way to develop your skills while being part of the wider eventing community.

Finding the Right Fit

Qualifications matter – but so does compatibility.
When choosing a coach, consider:
  • Do they communicate in a way that motivates and reassures you?
  • Do they understand your horse and its stage of development?
  • Are they realistic yet encouraging about your goals?
  • Do you leave sessions feeling clearer and more confident?
It is perfectly reasonable to book an initial session before committing longer term. A strong coach–rider relationship is built on trust, clarity and shared expectations.
